Tree Care for Piedmont Pines, Oaks and Hills
Tree service in Marietta usually means working with height. Yards from the Square out to East Cobb are shaded by loblolly pines, white and red oaks, hickories and tulip poplars that grew up long before the houses did, and many of them now tower over roofs, decks and driveways. Marietta sits at about 1,129 feet in Georgia's upper Piedmont, with Kennesaw Mountain rising to 1,808 feet just to the northwest, so a lot of lots slope, and the ground under them is red clay. Getting a large tree down or cut back safely on that kind of ground, without tearing up the yard, is most of what a tree company here is paid to do.
Summer storms, ice and tropical rain
Marietta gets about 54.6 inches of precipitation a year, and summer afternoons around Atlanta carry a 20 to 40 percent chance of thunderstorms. Those storms bring the sudden gusts that snap pine tops and drop oak limbs. Winter is milder, but ice is the real risk: Atlanta was hit by two ice storms a week apart in January 2000, and the storms of January 1973 and January 2011 are counted among the worst. Tropical systems reach this far inland too. In 2017 Irma put Atlanta under its first-ever tropical storm warning, and three people in Georgia died from falling trees and debris. In 2024 Helene dropped 11.12 inches of rain on Atlanta in 48 hours, which saturates clay soil and makes shallow-rooted trees easier to tip over.
Pine bark beetles and emerald ash borer
The Georgia Forestry Commission describes three bark beetles that attack pines: the southern pine beetle, which can kill even healthy trees, and Ips engraver and black turpentine beetles, which go after pines stressed by drought, storm damage or mechanical injury. Signs include small white or yellow pitch tubes on the bark, brown boring dust in bark crevices and at the base, and green needles falling. Emerald ash borer was first found in Georgia in DeKalb and Fulton counties in July 2013 and was confirmed in Cobb County the next year, so any ash in a Marietta yard is worth checking.
Red clay and roots
Much of the Georgia Piedmont sits on soils like the Cecil series: a thin sandy loam over red, kaolinite-rich clay that drains well but recovers poorly once it is compacted. That matters twice. Trucks and lifts on a wet clay lawn leave ruts, so we plan routes and sometimes wait for drier ground. And trees whose roots were crushed or cut when a house, pool or driveway went in can decline for years afterward; the Georgia Forestry Commission lists root damage from construction or trenching among the things tree owners should watch for.
Old trees, old neighborhoods
Marietta was incorporated in 1852 and has several historic districts, including Northwest Marietta, Whitlock Avenue, Washington Avenue and Church-Cherokee, where large shade trees stand close to older houses and narrow drives. Census figures put the median value of an owner-occupied home in the city at about $448,500, which is one more reason to take a big limb down in pieces rather than risk dropping it on a roof. Before any work on a tree along the street, in a historic district or tied to construction, we suggest a call to the City of Marietta or Cobb County, because rules differ inside and outside city limits.
What every estimate covers
- Species, lean, dead wood, cracks, cavities and signs of beetles or disease
- What the tree could hit: house, deck, fence, driveway, the neighbor's yard
- Power lines, and whether Marietta Power, Cobb EMC or another utility needs to be called first
- Slope, soft ground and the route a crew and equipment would take
- What happens to the logs, chips, brush and stump
- A written price for each tree, with nothing added unless you approve it
Common Questions
How much does tree service cost in Marietta?
It depends on the tree's height, what it stands near and how easy it is to reach. HomeGuide's 2026 figures put most tree removals between $400 and $1,200, with trees over 80 feet at $1,200 to $2,500 or more, and trimming from $250 for a small tree to $2,500 or more for one over 60 feet. Tall pines over a house cost more than the same pines at the edge of the woods. We give a written price after seeing the tree.
Do I need a permit to cut down a tree in Marietta?
It depends on where the tree is and why it is coming down. The City of Marietta and unincorporated Cobb County have their own development rules, and work tied to building, grading, a stream buffer or a street tree can involve them. For a tree on a private lot that is not part of construction, call the city or county planning office if you are unsure; we will mention it during the estimate if anything about the site suggests a check is needed.
My pine has little blobs of sap on the trunk. Is it dying?
Possibly. The Georgia Forestry Commission says dime-sized white, yellow or pinkish pitch tubes, brown boring dust and green needles on the ground are signs of pine bark beetles. Southern pine beetle can kill healthy trees and spread to nearby pines, while Ips and black turpentine beetles go after stressed ones. Have the tree looked at soon; GFC recommends prompt removal of badly damaged pines.
Is there a tree service near me that will come out after a storm?
Yes. Call and leave the details any time, including whether a tree is on the house, blocking a driveway or touching wires. We sort storm calls by danger, so trees on roofs and blocked exits are handled first. If a line is involved, call the utility first; Cobb EMC says to stay away from any tree touching a power line and to call 911 for an electrical hazard.
Does homeowners insurance pay for tree removal after a storm?
Often, when the tree damages a covered structure such as the house or a fence. HomeGuide notes that policies typically cover about $500 to $1,000 per tree for removal in those cases, and usually not for a tree that falls in open yard without hitting anything. Check your policy and photograph the damage before work starts; our written quote can go to your adjuster.
Does Georgia license tree companies or arborists?
No. The Georgia Forestry Commission states that the State of Georgia does not license or certify arborists; certification comes from the International Society of Arboriculture. GFC advises asking any tree company for proof of workers' compensation and liability insurance, confirming it with the insurer, and getting a signed contract with the dates, cleanup and total price.
When should trees be pruned in the Atlanta area?
Most deciduous shade trees can be pruned in the dormant season, roughly late fall through winter, when the structure is easy to see and before spring growth. Prune spring-flowering trees right after they bloom. Dead, cracked or hanging limbs should come off whenever you find them, especially before summer storm season.
Who trims trees near the power lines in my yard?
The utility that owns the line. Cobb EMC, for example, trims on a planned cycle and clears 15 feet on each side from the center of a primary pole; inside Marietta, many homes are on Marietta Power. Do not prune branches growing into lines yourself. Once a line is clear, we can handle the rest of the tree.

Marietta is the center of our service area, and we work across Cobb County around it: Smyrna and Vinings toward the Chattahoochee, Kennesaw and Acworth to the north along I-75, Powder Springs, Austell and Mableton to the south and west, and the subdivisions of East Cobb. The weather and the trees are much the same across the county, with tall pines, mixed oak and hickory, and red clay everywhere. What changes is the ground and the rules: steeper lots near Kennesaw Mountain and the ridges, creek buffers near the Chattahoochee, newer subdivisions with HOA landscape rules, and different permit offices depending on whether an address is inside a city or in unincorporated Cobb. Each area page covers what we know about that place.
